Penguin Dice Addition Game

January 19, 2017 by Emma Edwards Leave a Comment

As 20th January is Penguin Awareness Day we have teamed up with our favorite bloggers to bring you 20 Snow-Tastic Penguin Activities. From Busy Bags to learning activities, sensory play to penguin printables there is something for everyone. I decided to use the theme to create a mathematical activity – a Penguin Dice Addition Game.

As soon as I saw the Mr Penguin Ice Cube Tray I knew I had to purchase it for a play activity. At the time I had no idea what I would use it for. When we got home I realised that a dice could fit inside the round ice cube hole. With the penguin lid on top, the dice could still move around but was contained in the individual hole.

Resources needed for Penguin Dice Addition Game

* Mr Penguin Ice Cube Tray

* Two small dice

* Chalkola Pens

* Cloth or kitchen roll

How to set up Penguin Dice Addition Game

1) Take the lid off of the Mr Penguin Ice Cube Tray. Place two dice above each other in the tray. Place the lid back on.

2) Use a black Chalkola Pen to write a plus and equals symbol on the tray lid.

How to play Penguin Dice Addition Game

The Penguin Dice Addition Game was so easy to play yet kept Adam occupied for ages. He had to shake the Penguin tray and see what numbers the two dice landed on. He then added the two numbers together and wrote the answer underneath using a Chalkola Pen. Adam liked to use a different colour Chalkola Pen for each addition. He then rubbed out the Chalkola Pen using kitchen roll and started the game again.

Our Penguin Dice Addition Game makes a great Busy Bag activity which can be taken out and about. What a super way to occupy Adam in the car! I plan to extend the game by adding another dice underneath. Adam will have to add the three numbers together and write the answer below. I wonder what other activities I can some up with using our Mr Penguin Ice Cube Tray?!
