The fridge door is a big, magnetic, vertical play surface going spare in most kitchens. Turn a few toy vehicles into magnets, add a road, and you have a car track a toddler can drive standing up, right there while you cook. It is the same loved-it-for-hours car play, only off the floor and out from under your feet. Ages 2 to 4.
What you need
- A few small, light toy vehicles. Flat wooden ones, like the pieces from an outgrown transport puzzle, are ideal.
- Self-adhesive magnetic strips or dots, from a craft store.
- A road. Draw one on paper and tape it up, lay out strips of masking tape straight onto the fridge, or use a road-themed wall sticker set.
Making it
Stick a magnet onto the back of each vehicle and check it holds on the fridge without sliding. Heavier toy cars need a stronger magnet, so test as you go. One tip worth knowing: bare magnets dragged across a fridge can scratch the door, so keep a layer of sticker, tape, or felt between the magnet and the metal. Then build your road up the door at a toddler’s height and park the vehicles ready to go.
How it plays
Driving the cars around a track that stands upright is a different challenge from the floor. A child has to reach, stretch, and work against gravity to keep a vehicle on the road, which is good for the bigger arm movements as well as the fingers. Peeling a magnet off and placing it back on the road is satisfying in itself, and the cars, gas stations, and little buildings invite all the usual made-up journeys and traffic jams.
Best of all, it lives on the fridge and is there whenever you need a few minutes in the kitchen. Move the road around now and then, or swap the vehicles for magnetic letters and numbers, and the same patch of door keeps earning its keep.
