Broken Hearts Puzzle

February 2, 2016 by Emma Gadsby 4 Comments

This weeks #toolsforlearning challenge is to use foam stickers. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner we couldn’t resist creating a Broken Hearts Puzzle using glitter foam heart stickers.

Setting up the activity was straightforward. I took a large heart shaped frame (purchased from Wilco) and removed the glass and white mount. On the white backing paper I placed 13 glitter heart foam stickers (similar to these on Amazon).

I then set about cutting the hearts. Some I cut straight down the middle and others I cut off just a small section. The rest I cut using a variety of zig zags or curved lines. I made sure that no two coloured hearts were cut the same way. I then peeled the backing away from one half of each sticker and positioned it onto the white paper in the frame. The other half of the heart I kept the backing paper in place and put them into a heart shaped container.

It was time to play our game. Adam and I took it in turns to take one half a heart from the container and find its corresponding piece within the frame. Once it was found we positioned the two halves together to complete the heart.

The activity made Adam focus on the differences between each heart. First he would locate the hearts that were the same colour and then he described whether the cut in the heart was straight, curved or a zig zag. Positioning the two halves together developed his fine motor skills. The slightly raised foam sticker that was stuck to the photo frame gave Adam a base on which to position the other half next to and complete the puzzle.

Once the entire heart frame was completed Adam removed all the non-sticky hearts and placed them back into the container. He then started the puzzle again. He repeated this for 45 minutes straight. Towards the end he became incredibly quick at locating the other half of the heart and completing the puzzle.

DIY puzzle using stickers

As we didn’t remove the backing of one half of each heart sticker Adam is able to use his broken heart puzzle as a busy bag. It is an activity he can return to time and time again.
