Yacht Tuff Spot

April 10, 2015 by Emma Edwards 1 Comment

We are combining our penultimate Tuff Spot A-Z Challenge activity with Best Toys 4 Toddlers 60 Day Junk Play Challenge. We took part a few weeks ago with our Mirror Painting. This time the challenge was to turn shampoo bottles into a toy or play idea. As our Tuff Spot A-Z Challenge letter is Y we decided to create a Yacht Tuff Spot.

60 Day Junk Play Challenge

Our shampoo bottle yachts were easy to make and Adam did most of the setting up himself. We peeled the labels from four Aussie Shampoo bottles and covered them in stickers. Using scissors I made a hole in the side of the bottle and inserted a lolly stick. In order for our yachts to stay upright we weighted the bottles by pouring rice into each bottle. Finally I made sails using foam sheets and used a hole punch to make holes for the lolly stick to go through. You can imagine the fun we had attempting to get a 2 year old to use a hole punch!

So we didn’t get a repeat of our last water based Tuff Spot activity we took the Tuff Spot and Tuff Spot Stand outside. I adjusted the Tuff Spot Stand to its highest setting. As I filled the Tuff Spot with water I realised our garden isn’t particularly flat. We certainly had one deep end and one shallow end!

I had made some flags so that our activity could become a yacht race. However, no matter what we tried we could not get the flags to stay upright – back to the drawing board for that.

Despite not being able to race our yachts around a race track, Adam had a great time blowing his shampoo bottle yacht around the Tuff Spot. I am pleased to say the shampoo bottle yachts stayed up right despite Adam’s best attempts to make them sink! Not bad for a recycled play activity.

So much fun! My kids enjoy anything involving water and surely would love this too! Thank you for taking part in 60 Days Junk Play Challenge, both you and Adam!
