Willow’s Baby Photoshoot with Jess Wilkins Photography

May 25, 2018 by Emma Edwards Leave a Comment

One of my biggest post-HG regrets after having Adam was that I didn’t arrange a baby photoshoot. I was too ill during the pregnancy that I couldn’t think about life after labour. Once he was here I had left it too late to book anything. This time round I wanted to change that. I have been following Jess Wilkins, a Norfolk photographer, on Instagram and Facebook for several years. I simply loved her style of baby photography – simple and elegant photos where the focus is on the baby rather than the props. The photoshoot gave me something to look forward during my difficult pregnancy. At last I was going to have those beautiful baby photos I had always wanted.

Another reason I didn’t have a baby photoshoot with Adam was because I was too anxious. What if my baby didn’t respond to the camera? What about if they cried during the whole shoot? Would my parenting style be judged throughout the experience? However, getting to know Jess on social media I felt at ease and after the photoshoot I couldn’t believe I had ever been worried.

Jess has a studio based in her home in Norwich. The location immediately put Willow and myself at ease as it was based in a familiar setting. The serene environment complimented Jess’ calm approach and the studio is equipped with everything you may need.

Willow was nearly 7 weeks old when we went for the mini portrait session. As she had gone past the scrunched up sleeping newborn phase, we opted for the Newborn Mini Package which is ideal for babies 5-12 weeks old. I was hoping for bright eyed awake shots and capturing Willows first smiles instead.

Jess requested that I dressed Willow beforehand in a neutral coloured babygrow. Although Willow was asleep when we arrived she was too interested in what was going on and remained awake throughout the photoshoot. She had one quick top up feed during the session but the rest of the time stayed with Jess.

How did Willow react to the photoshoot? Simply put, she fell in love with Jess!

I was dubious about the term “baby whisperer” beforehand but after seeing Jess in action there is no better way to describe her work. She was patient, friendly and caring and I really felt comfortable with her handling our precious newborn.

Throughout the photoshoot I loved how Jess focused on the finer details of Willow – the ones that will change rapidly. Jess adored Willow’s knee chub. I know we will reminisce about those little details further down the line so I love how Jess was able to capture the memories of now.

What surprised me was how the photoshoot turned into a bonding experience. I got to watch Willow’s little personality shine through as she interacted with Jess. She may only be 7 weeks old yet she appeared to be flirting and working the camera.

The session lasted for about an hour and was completely led by Willow’s mood. It was not rushed at all and we both had a wonderful time. I couldn’t wait to see the photos. Sure enough we were not disappointed. Photos are usually ready within 5-10 working days are appear via a password protected gallery link. You are then able to download the photographs.

I can’t recommend Jess highly enough. Her manner with Willow during the photoshoot was relaxed and soothing and the finished photographs are stunning. Jess has managed to capture Willows emerging personality and we have timeless memories captured forever.

Jess is available for maternity, newborn, baby, toddler and family photographs and we shall certainly be using her skills again in the future. You can find more information on her website, facebook page or follow her on instagram.
