It is #RhymeTime again and our latest Nursery Rhyme is “The Wheels On The Bus”. Having a transport mad 3 year old means The Wheels On The Bus is a much loved song in our household. It was one of the first Nursery Rhymes that Adam signed and would become so animated. When I spotted a bus biscuit tin in Marks and Spencer I knew it gave me the perfect opportunity to create something that has been on my to-do-list forever. So we created Wheels On The Bus Story Stones.

We used decorative stones purchased from 99p Store. As I have zero artistic ability I was unable to draw images directly onto the story stones. So I cheated with the help of Twinkl. I printed off their Wheels On The Bus page border and cut out the individual images linked to the rhyme.
To stick the pictures onto the stones I used watered down PVA glue. Once the image was in place I added a layer of watered down PVA glue on top of the picture to create a varnish. This does take a while to dry.
We have a story stone for each verse of The Wheels On The Bus:
The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish
The people on the bus go up and down
The mums on the bus go “shh, shh, shh”
The bus conductor says “money please”
The door on the bus goes open and shut
The children on the bus go chatter
The babies on the bus go waa
The motor on the bus goes zoom
To dampen the sound of the stones inside the Marks and Spencer biscuit tin I cut out a rectangle of felt and placed it in the bottom. Time will tell if I need to add felt to the inside walls as well.
Once our 8 story stones were dry we placed them inside the bus biscuit tin ready to sing the song. As we sung the main verse of “The Wheels On The Bus” Adam pushed the bus around his VTech Playmat.
.
At the end of the verse we stopped the bus, took the lid off and removed one of the story stones. That gave us a prompt as to which verse we should sing next. Adam replaced the lid and the bus continued its journey as we sung the verse. We repeated the same routine for all 8 story stones.
Once he completed the song Adam repeated the Nursery Rhyme but this time added the story stones to the bus during the song.
What I love about our Wheels On The Bus Story Stones is the independence they give Adam to sing the song. They quickly remind him of another verse of the Nursery Rhyme whilst he pushed the bus around the car mat. As Adam loved the activity so much I will be making further Wheels On The Busy Story Stones using Twinkl’s resource pack.
