Valentine’s Day Sensory Bin – Day 95 Toddler Play Challenge

February 14, 2014 by Emma Gadsby Leave a Comment

As it was Valentines Day we opted for a themed activity. I had bought pop corn kernels in preparation for a sensory bin activity so added some heart shaped objects I found at the 99p Store.

It was raining so we had to resort to doing the activity inside. I placed a shallow box inside a larger box and immediately Adam knew what was going to happen.

The larger box was perfect for Adam to sit in and it meant the shallow box was an ideal height for Adam to play with. The larger box also collected any stray pop corn kernels.

I showed Adam how he could scoop up the kernels and sprinkle them into a heart shape. However, Adam had soon removed all the heart shaped objects, placed them in the larger box and focused on playing with just the kernels.

Moving the kernels around the box made a great noise and dropping them back into the box made it sound like popping pop corn.

Once he had experimented with the sound of the kernels Adam put the heart objects back in the box.

Despite Adam pushing the kernels around the box a lot very few kernels ended up on the floor. I picked them up throughout the activity and Adam spotted what I was doing. He climbed out of the box and started picking up his own kernels.

He then played with the kernels outside of the box.

It was a great activity to help improve Adams fine motor skills and all of the resources can be reused for future play activities.
