Day 21 of our 31 Day Sensory Play Challenge is the day for making sensory bottles, sometimes known as discovery bottles. We created our first batch on day 9 of our 100 day toddler play challenge and bottles numbered 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are still being played with 14 months later. This time we decided to make four Valentine sensory bottles.
Two of the sensory bottles were oil based. In one plastic bottle I added pink coloured water and vegetable oil. In the other I added baby oil and pink coloured water. To both bottles I added plastic heart buttons, like the ones used for our Love Hearts Threading Busy Bag. I then super glued the lids on. You may want to add another layer of protection from little hands opening the bottles. Last time I added electrical tape around the lid.
The other two Valentine sensory bottles were filled with neon pink rice. After playing with our Neon rice sensory bin I discovered that I had forgotten to add the neon pink rice to the activity. It was a perfect opportunity to add them to two of our Valentine sensory bottles. In one plastic bottle I added plastic heart buttons and in the other I added mini Love Hearts. It is important not to fill the sensory bottles to the top otherwise the rice does not have enough space to move around and it makes it harder to locate the objects inside.
The great thing about our Neon Valentine sensory bottles is that they can be played with in the dark using a Handheld UV Blacklight (affiliate link).
This time I let Adam control the Handheld UV Blacklight. He had a wonderful time experimenting with the torch and trying to find the hearts inside the neon sensory bottle. He also went around the living room looking for other items that were effected by the torch. Adam certainly loves playing in the dark!
