“On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me: Ten Lords-A-Leaping.”
We veered away from our usual no preparation activities and made ten split pin Lords. Luckily I did not have to draw ten Lords as I had help from the wonderful Twinkl website. However, as pictures of Lords are hard to come by I had to be creative and adapted a picture of a Royal Grenadia Guard.
Then came the time consuming part – cutting out 10 bodies, 20 arms and 20 legs. Adam helped me to stick on the foam numbers and I laminated all the pieces. With hindsight I should have stuck the foam numbers on after laminating. I then had to cut out all the pieces again! Each Lord required four split pins to attach the arms and legs. Finally we had 10 Lords ready to leap.
I laid the ten Lords on the floor and called out a number. The toddlers had to search for that numbered Lord and make him leap into the air.
Our ten Lords-A-Leaping activity was great for reinforcing numbers to ten and for developing fine motor skills. The toddlers had to coordinate both hands together in order to get the Lord to leap into the air. Perhaps one day I shall turn them into Jumping Jack Lords!
