It is Rhyme Time again and a chance to share a Nursery Rhyme related activity with you. Today’s rhyme is I’m A Little Teapot.
“I’m a little teapot
Short and stout
Here is my handle
Here is my spout.
When I get all steamed up
Hear me shout
Tip me over
and pour me out!”
Sometimes play activities do not go as planned. Today was one of those days. Our original activity was to paint with tea bags and to turn our painting into a picture of a teapot. I purchased three packets of Twinings herbal tea – blackcurrant and vanilla, cranberry and raspberry and lemon and ginger. I attached pegs to the herbal teabags so that Adam could hold them easily and placed them in a shallow tray with warm water. I covered the Tuff Spot in paper and demonstrated to Adam how to do the activity. Unfortunately the herbal tea I had chosen didn’t produce enough colour to show up on the paper.
Furthermore, Adam took one look at the teapot and wanted to pour water over the paper. I decided to go with his idea and quickly pulled the paper up, got a variety of cups from the kitchen and his toy box and made up large jugs of tea using our herbal tea bags. Our activity turned into teabag sensory fun.
For a little boy who doesn’t like to get messy, Adam dived straight into the activity and was soon soaked to the elbow in herbal tea. He had a wonderful time pouring the herbal tea into the cups and then transferring the tea from one container to another. Each time his teapot was empty Adam would take the teabag out, squeeze it and ask for more water.
The activity soon turned into role play with us pretending we were in a cafe with Adam serving cups of tea. He asked me what tea I would like and we did our traditional “cheers” as we clinked cups. I wouldn’t fancy being his customer though as herbal tea went everywhere!
Adam seemed fascinated by the teabags so I decided to open one up so he could explore its contents. The smell from each bag was wonderful and added an extra sensory dimension to the activity. The herbs created a brilliant texture to play with and Adam enjoyed swirling the water around the Tuff Spot.
Our teabag sensory fun messy play activity may not have been our planned activity but Adam certainly enjoyed it!
