The past few days I have have found myself reflecting on Adam’s previous summer holidays. This August will be Adam’s fourth summer. The Summer holidays are a big deal in our household. Dad-Dad is a head teacher so August is an opportunity to enjoy life as a family without the pressure of work, commitments and time constraints of the working week.
In August 2012 Adam was 3 months old. The holiday was spent with me recovering from the horrific pregnancy and after birth complications. I had recently found the help of Pregnancy Sickness Support charity and attended my first Hyperemesis Gravidarum conference. As a result I was determined to fund raise for the charity. Throughout August Nana and I completed the Wherryman’s Way – a 35 mile walk following the River Yare between Norwich and Great Yarmouth. This walk was tough going considering I had spent the previous 9 months unable to walk up stairs unaided as I had been so ill.
In August 2013 Adam went on his first family holiday. Nine of us flew to Majorica and spent the week swimming and relaxing as much as you can with three children! Adam loved having his two cousins with him every day and we even survived a nine hour delay coming home – with the help of a luggage trolley to occupy Adam!
Last year I spent the summer training for Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge to raise money for Pregnancy Sickness Support. We completed several long distance walks before the big event at the beginning of September.
I also made a long Summer Buck list of activities I wanted us to do throughout the 6 weeks. We reviewed several attractions as part of our Adventures of Adam around Norfolk section of the blog. However, I struggled with finding a work-life balance and felt I didn’t give myself the opportunity to stop during the holiday.
Looking ahead to Summer 2015. This year I will be ditching the Summer Bucket list. After reading a great article by The OK Mama it made me realise a bucket list is simply a to-do list in disguise. I didn’t want a repeat of last summer and put to much pressure on myself. So this year we have a holiday to Ibiza booked and that is it. We have zero other plans for the holiday.
We will be taking each day as it comes – a rare occurrence for me! Summer 2015 will be the year we find a balance in our life between doing things that need to be done and things that we want to do. Will we find this balance? Only time will tell!
What are your favourite summer memories? What are you doing differently this year to what you would usually do?
