Reusable Ice Cube Play

November 5, 2015 by Emma Gadsby Leave a Comment

Day 5 of our 30 Day Simple Play At Home challenge is focused on easy play activities in the living room. Our living room is where the majority of our play activities take place. We have plenty of space and have access to a large carpet area, a patio door, a small table and our Tuff Spot.

Adventures of Adam 30 Day Simple Play At Home Challenge

Today I set up a simple reusable ice cube play activity.  Over the summer I purchased a set of 20 reusable plastic ice cubes. They have been handy to use in a play activity if I need to occupy Adam for a few moments. He usually likes to make towers with them.

On the table I placed the plastic ice cubes and a photo frame with the glass removed.

I let Adam explore the plastic ice cubes in his own way. First he created his usual towers. Five ice cubes is his record so far.

He then made a repeating pattern with the cubes. We played a game where Adam closed his eyes and I removed one of the ice cubes. Adam had to work out what colour I had hidden. Adam then attempted to remove a cube for me to guess but couldn’t resist telling me the colour before I had even opened my eyes!

Adam then turned his attention to the picture frame. He used the ice cubes to fill the space inside the frame. This was a great activity to develop his spacial awareness.

In total Adam played with the reusable ice cube play activity for 20 minutes. Not bad for an activity that didn’t need any preparation!

To add a sensory element to this activity you could pop the reusable ice cubes into the freezer before play time. We are looking forward to using our plastic reusable ice cubes on our DIY light box. I bet the colours of the plastic cubes will look amazing!
