Penguin High Frequency Word Sensory Bin

November 18, 2016 by Emma Gadsby Leave a Comment

2016 has all been about penguins for us! My brother wrote his first book “Parker The Penguin Wants To Fly”, we have completed many penguin activities and of course we are nearly at the end of our 365 Penguins adventure. If you haven’t heard about 365 Penguins – we have had a penguin delivered to our house every day throughout the year. Adam also chose to do a Penguin Christmas Card for the Pregnancy Sickness Support charity. You can purchase Adam’s winning Christmas Card via the PSS website.

As Adam created so many penguins whilst making the cards I decided to put them to great use in a Penguin High Frequency Word Sensory Bin.

Making our penguins were easy. We used two potatoes to stamp the penguin outline using black and white paint and the end of a pencil to add orange paint feet and beak. Finally we added a google eye to complete our penguin. For our Penguin High Frequency Word Sensory Bin I cut out the penguins and wrote the words on the penguins belly using a black permanent marker pen.

For our penguin sensory bin base I simply used white rice. I hid the Penguin High Frequency Words in the sensory bin and that was all! I certainly love quick set up activities that reuse resources.

Adam loved discovering the penguins underneath the white rice. Each time he found a new one I would tell him what was written on the penguins belly. If the word could be sounded out then we did it together. It didn’t take him long before Adam could remember each word.

We played several games of “find the penguin” where Adam to remember where certain high frequency word penguins were hidden within the sensory bin. We then swapped roles where Adam would call out a high frequency word and I had to search for that penguin. I wonder what penguin adventures we shall have next year.

Welcome!

Emma and Adam

During a difficult pregnancy suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) Emma vowed to make every day an adventure once she had recovered. Adventures of Adam is the outcome of completing a 100 day play challenge with Adam as part of that promise. Emma has a section dedicated to HG friendly play activities so that Mums can still be part of their children’s play whilst they are ill.
