We had a last minute change of plan for today’s Tuff Spot A-Z Challenge. We had planned to have an Orange Tuff Spot where we would be rolling oranges in paint and using the Tuff Spot as a giant tray. However, the weather has been miserable. Despite holding off it was obvious our plans had to change. Adam has started to enjoy Owl Babies (affiliate link) by Martin Waddell so I opted to create a O is for Owl Babies Tuff Spot.
We placed our black Tuff Spot Tray (affiliate link) on our Cosy Direct Stand and placed our new grass DIY Tuff Spot mat on top. Our grass mat cost less that £3 – take a look at our other DIY Tuff Spot Mats.
I placed two logs covered in ivy from Nana and Grandad’s wood and additional wooden disks that Grandad created for Adam’s Hickory Dickory Dock Tuff Spot. I also included the Wooden Tree Stands we had previously painted for our Easter Tuff Spot. I created a nest from a hanging basket liner and shredded a brown paper bag.
It was finally a chance for Adam to play with the Tawny Owl Hand Puppet (affiliate link) that he has had his eye on for some time. I received it as a leaving present when I left one of my classes. It comes with three babies but unfortunately one is somewhere in our garage.
I placed the two baby owls on the log. Adam took one look at it, shook his head and went over to our toy box. He searched and searched and found the baby chick from our Easter Tuff Spot. He obviously was not happy with only playing with two babies and decided a chick was the closest object we had to put in its place.
Adam found the concept of a small world Tuff Spot strange. He automatically went to “do” something. He wanted to stack the wooden disks and try and balance them on the trees. I suppose all our Tuff Spot activities up until now have focused on developing skills such as fine motor skills or mathematical development rather than imaginative play. This is certainly one area that does not come naturally to Adam. He enjoyed caring for the owl babies and making the Tawny Owl fly around the living room.
