Noisy Rice Krispies Tuff Spot

February 23, 2015 by Emma Gadsby Leave a Comment

This activity, as part of our sense of hearing week, is inspired by an Adventures of Adam reader. During day 23 our 31 Day Sensory Play Challenge, Haley came up with this activity:

Haley sounds

Haley wrote: “we painted Rice Krispies with spray paint made up in water spray bottles. Little one needed help to hold and spray at the time as they were quite heavy. On spraying the first colour, we stopped and listened for the ‘crackling’. She put her hands in and ‘crunched’ a few handfuls. Once she had sprayed as many colours as she could, she got in and stomped them down – I called this ‘crushing’. As you can see at the end, she fell over – I thought ‘whooshing’ was a good description for the sound it made.” We couldn’t wait to give it a try!

Our Noisy Rice Krispies Tuff Spot was incredibly easy to set up. I poured a large container of Kelloggs Rice Krispies (510g) onto our Tuff Spot Tray (affiliate link). Do you like our new Tuff Spot Stand? It is from Cosy Direct. Have a read of our review.

Adventures of Adam Spraying paint onto Rice Krispies

Some time ago I was given a miniature sample bottle of antibacterial spray which I emptied, cleaned and filled with paint and water. Unfortunately I only had one bottle so I had to empty the bottle each time Adam wanted a new colour.

I gave Adam the small bottle and let him spray the coloured water onto the Rice Krispies. It made a wonderful noise. Adam immediately put his ear towards and tuff spot and looked thoroughly confused. Having never eaten Rice Krispies he didn’t know they made a noise.

Adam found it difficult to manipulate the small spray bottle and ended up spraying his face several times. He wanted to hold it and spray using one hand like I could but his hands are not yet big enough. It didn’t stop his determination though! We sprayed the Rice Krispies with blue, green and red paint. Adam loved shouting “pop” repeatedly!

Adam couldn’t hold out any longer and it wasn’t long before his cars made an appearance. He loved crunching the Rice Krispies with his car wheels and making different tracks.

Adam played with the Rice Krispies Tuff Spot for 45 minutes! Not bad for under £2. You could easily turn this activity into an edible noisy Rice Krispies Tuff Spot activity simply by replacing the paint with food colouring. A huge thank you to Haley for inspiring our play.
