We were delighted to be asked to review the “Mumsnet book of Animal Stories.” It is a delightful hardback book of ten animal stories. However, these are not just ten stories picked at random. They have been chosen from hundreds of entries in the Mumsnet, Gransnet and Walker Books children’s story competition. The book showcases new writing talent and has created a book that is uniquely by parents, for parents.
The difficult task of chairing the judging of the competition was down to Anthony Browne. He says “the ten we eventually selected are a wonderful range of funny, lyrical and captivating stories that we hope will delight children and families at bedtimes for years to come.” The book certainly deliverers, although we feel it is a book that perfect for any time of day.
From brave bats to scared monkeys, sleepless hedgehogs to hamsters visiting space, there is something for everyone.Take a look at the exciting contents:
Little Miss Wolfy Good // Jenny Davis
Captain Yuri and the Space Mission // Susannah O’Brien
The Hedgehog Who Wouldn’t Sleep // Alison Webb

Adam and I have read a different story at bedtime and the book makes an appearance several times throughout the day – Adam loves story time! I had an idea on which story would be his favourite. It had to be The Great Meerkat Escape by Nina Hoole. Adam loves meerkats and they have featured in our play before with our Meerkat Manor Sensory Bin. He frequently asks for the that story and his meerkats always join him!
The Mumsnet Book of Animal Stories would make a perfect addition to any childs bookshelf. I know the book will be treasured for years to come. As Adam grows I know he will favour different stories within the collection at different times. As his imagination develops he will not see animals in the same light again! I also know this book will feature in our book themed play in the not too distant future.
The book is available to buy from Amazon and is priced at £12.99.
Adam was 2 years and 5 months old.
