Light Reflections Tuff Spot

October 12, 2015 by Emma Gadsby Leave a Comment

As the nights draw in and it gets darker earlier every evening we have the opportunity to use our Tuff Spot in the dark. Last year we used our Tuff Spot for glow in the dark spaghetti, neon painting and a neon rice sensory bin. It felt good to be turning off the lights and to make a Light Reflections Tuff Spot.

On a recent shopping trip to B&M, a UK department store, I discovered 3 plastic light cubes for £2.99. The mood light cubes change colour frequently. I bought two boxes as they reminded me of building blocks. I wondered if Adam could create towers with them. Amazon also sell similar cubes.

To create a base to see the reflection of the cube lights I used an A4 Acrylic Mirror purchased from Imagido. As the mirror is acrylic it will not break easily like a normal mirror. This makes it perfect for play with little ones. In the Tuff Spot I also placed 8 flickering battery operated tealights. These were recycled from our Glowing Ghosts.

Adam took to the light cubes straight away. He had the same idea as me and immediately used the cubes to build a tower.

It was surprising how many different towers Adam managed to build with only 6 blocks. In true Adam style he couldn’t build a tower without quickly knocking it down.

After about the 6th tower Adam looked down onto the mirror and shouted “more blocks!” He had seen the reflection of the blocks in the mirror.

We loved how the blocks changed colour frequently adding an additional element to our light play.

Adam then turned his attention to the flickering tealights. He kept adding one to his completed tower and declared it was a princess. To him the flickering candle tealight looked like a crown.

With the clocks going back soon we shall certainly be exploring more night time Tuff Spot activities!
