Day 18 of our 31 Day Sensory Play Challenge takes us to playing with cloud dough. This is our second time playing with the home made sensory material. Adam loved cloud dough but it looks a bit dull. I wanted to add colour to it but adding food colouring to cloud dough just doesn’t work. Food colouring is water based whereas cloud dough is oil based so the two do not work. Looking in our sensory storage boxes I came across coloured chalk and wondered whether this could be used to change the colour of our cloud dough.
As there were more purple coloured pieces of chalk in the container I decided to create purple cloud dough. The purple reminded me of lavender so I decided to add a small amount of lavender oil to extend the sensory experience.
To make our lavender cloud dough I poured 4 cups of flour into a mixing bowl and grated three sticks of chalk. Once the two ingredients were mixed together I added 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. Cloud dough can be made with either vegetable oil or baby oil but unfortunately we were out of baby oil. Whilst I was combining the three ingredients together I added a very small amount of lavender oil.
Cloud dough is wonderful. You can mould it and use cookie cutters with it but it crumbles easily by rubbing it together.
I wanted Adam to explore the cloud dough whilst standing up but didn’t want to get cloud dough across the floor. So it was finally a chance to use our sensory bin stand that I started to make over the Summer. We were inspired by Mama. Papa. Bubba‘s simple sensory bin stand. It was so easy to make – although we are yet to decorate ours. Pop over to Mama. Papa. Bubba for instructions on how to make it.
Overall Adam preferred to crumble the cloud dough rather than use the cookie cutters. He enjoyed sprinkling the cloud dough into the star containers and smelling the lavender. The sensory bin stand worked wonders and the Tuff Spot Tray (affiliate link) collected any stray pieces of dough.
