Incy Wincy Spider Guttering Fun

July 22, 2015 by Emma Gadsby 13 Comments

This fortnights #RhymeTime activity is based on the Incy Wincy Spider Nursery Rhyme. As regular readers will know, Adam adores all ramp and guttering play. If Adam is able to push an item down a slope then he is happy. So we couldn’t miss the opportunity to have some Incy Wincy Spider Guttering fun.

“Incy Wincy Spider climbed up the waterspout
Down came the rain, and washed poor Incy out
Out came the sunshine and dried up all the rain
So Incy Wincy Spider climbed up the spout again.”

Today’s activity was also a great excuse to purchase more guttering for our garden. I opted for two pieces of white 2m Squareflo guttering along with a corner connector to join the two pieces at a right angle.

Adventures of Adam

I extended our Cosy Direct Tuff Spot Stand to its tallest height and placed our blue Tuff Spot on top along with one piece of guttering. A chair held the corner connector in place and the second piece of guttering went towards the ground. The second piece of guttering as positioning just above the black Tuff Spot using an up turned bucket (well actually an upside down cauldron!).

Adventures of Adam Pom pom spiders

With the guttering in place I set about making our own spiders. I used a Classic Knit Pom Pom Loom to create three different sized spiders from black wool. It was my first time at using a pom pom loom and I was impressed with how quick it was to make a pom pom. Even Adam tried out the loom. I placed our spiders in the Tuff Spot along with a plastic box of coloured blue water and various scoops and containers.

Adventures of Adam Incy Wincy Spider down the water spout

The object of the activity was for Adam to pour water down the guttering to get Incy Wincy Spider to slide down the “water spout”. Adam had such a wonderful time playing. He discovered the larger container of water made the spider go down the guttering quicker and that the larger spiders were “too slow” to go down.

Adam repeated the process time and time again. He experimented with how many spiders he could push down the guttering at once and which spider went down the quickest. We went through several boxes of coloured blue water!

Adventures of Adam Plui Cloud incy wincy spider

We did try using our Plui Rain Cloud from Imagido! to represent the rain cloud in the nursery rhyme. Unfortunately it didn’t give enough water pressure to move the spider. We shall certainly be trying out the rain cloud again soon with smaller spiders.

I can tell that our Incy Wincy Spider guttering will now be a permanent feature in our garden and Adam will have many more adventures with it!
