When we heard that we were attending the Thomas Land Press Event at Drayton Manor we were so excited. However, the theme park is 200 miles away from us and would take over 3 hours to get there. With Adam’s Sensory Processing Disorder needs this round trip would not be manageable within a day. We were therefore delighted when Holiday Inn Express offered us two nights accommodation.
Tamworth Holiday Inn Express is close to the Ventura Retail Park just off the M42. The hotel itself has an alpine-influenced design with an impressive green slope going down the five storey building. It is set right next to a lake and located next door to Tamworth Snow Dome. The car park is ticket operated but is free for hotel guests. You just need to validate your ticket at reception.
We arrived at 9pm on Friday night and was able to park near to the hotel door. We were warmly welcomed to the hotel. Checking in only took a couple of minutes despite my husband having to go back to the car to find out our car registration number. The receptionist confirmed whether we needed the sofa bed made up for Adam and assured us that someone would be along shortly.
We were on the fourth floor towards the back of the hotel. There were two large lifts or the options of stairs to take us to our room. Adam was in his element finding our room number 429. We were immediately impressed with the size of the room. There was a double bed with a large sofa which was positioned against the wall. Across from the sofa bed was a long table with a chair and a flat screen attached to the wall.
I wish I had got Adam’s reaction to the room on camera. He immediately shouted “wow” and started to give us a running commentary of everything that was in the room. “Mum, there is a holiday bed, a holiday TV, a holiday mirror” etc. Can you tell he was extremely excited about our mini holiday despite it being late.
Within a couple of minutes of being in the room a hotel worker came to make up Adam’s sofa bed. His bed was huge! Although it went up to the edge of the table opposite there was still plenty of space in the rest of the room.
If we thought Adam had been excited about the bedroom that was nothing compared to the bathroom. I think we all got excited by the size of the walk in shower. It was huge! I fell in love with the black tiles. Although the hotel does not provide the traditional small bottles of shampoo etc there is a hand dispenser filled with soap next to the sink and a mixture of body wash and shampoo in the shower.
The hotel room also came with a hairdryer attached to the wall next to the full length mirror, tea making facilities and large soft bath towels. Everything in the room was decorated to a high standard and was spotlessly clean.
After finally getting Adam to stop listing everything that was in the “holiday room” we managed to get him into bed. We had thought sharing a room would be difficult for our non-sleeper. With hotel stays in the past Adam has gone to bed extremely late and got up extremely early. However, the room was quiet, a nice temperature due to the thermostat controlled heating and very dark due to the black out curtains. For the first time in his life Adam slept until 7am. We had to wake him up in order to get ready for breakfast. Miracles do happen!
A continental breakfast is included with your hotel stay. We had expected the breakfast to consist of cereals and toast but were impressed with the large selection. A self service hot breakfast included sausages, beans and scrambled eggs. It was a great start to our day.
Within a few minutes of leaving Drayton Manor Theme Park that afternoon we were back in our hotel room. Adam got straight into his sofa bed to relax after his exciting day.
Although there is no restaurant attached to the hotel, reception was able to point us in the direction of some close by and we were pleased with the selection.
We had expected Adam’s first nights sleep to be a fluke but for our second night he slept 12 hours straight. We woke up fresh and ready for another adventure. After enjoying a hot and powerful shower we went downstairs for breakfast. The information board in the lift explained that breakfast on Sunday morning could be busy and suggested obtaining an allocated hour slot ticket. We had forgotten to get a ticket. Although it was certainly busier than the previous day another room had been opened up so there was plenty of seating. Staff were on hand to replenish any food items.
We were sad to be leaving our “Holiday House”. Checking out was easy and soon we were on the road again. As Birmingham was only 12 miles away we spent the day at Think Tank Museum before our long drive home.
Holiday Inn Express Hotel Tamworth was in the perfect location for our family adventure to Thomas Land. We were extremely happy with our hotel stay and would highly recommend Holiday Inn Express for family stays.
