Hickory Dickory Dock Tuff Spot

March 18, 2015 by Emma Gadsby Leave a Comment

I am excited to announce that we have teamed up with four of our favourite blogs to bring you the Rhyme Time Blog Hop. Every fortnight we will post an activity based on a nursery rhyme along with Danya Banya, Best Toys 4 Toddlers, Teach Me Mommy and Crafty Kids At Home. This weeks nursery rhyme is Hickory Dickory Dock.

The Rhyme Time Blog Hop happened to coincide with letter H of our Tuff Spot A-Z Challenge. It was perfect timing to create an H is for Hickory Dickory Dock Tuff Spot!

Adventures of Adam DIY wooden numbers

I wanted a way of creating a clock face on our Tuff Spot Tray (affiliate link). Nana and Grandad came up with the perfect item. They had recently cleared dead trees from their wood. Grandad cut Adam twelve rings from a branch and Nana sanded each section. I wrote a number on each of the wood segments in permanent marker pen. We had twelve numbered wooden disks for our clock face.

Adventures of Adam Toddler learning to tell the time

Adam loved creating the clock Tuff Spot – once he had got over the initial excitement of having a set of wooden numbers. I realised that Adam doesn’t get to see a clock in our house but managed to find a photo of Nana’s large clock and he used it to help him order the numbers around the Tuff Spot. Our Cosy Direct Tuff Spot Stand made it easy for Adam to move around the Tuff Spot. We used lolly sticks to create the hands of our clock.

“Hickory Dickory Dock” is a firm favourite nursery rhyme and we sang the song through all of the twelve numbers. He jumped for joy when I took out the wind up mouse I had purchased from Ebay.

The idea was to sing the song, for Adam to point to the number and for the mouse to follow the clock hand to reach the o’clock. However, our wind up mouse had a mind of its own. It would not go in a straight line!

Nevertheless Adam had a wonderful time chasing the mouse around shouting “three o’clock, seven o’clock!” or whichever number the mouse took itself to.  It was a great activity to introduce Adam to telling the time and made me realise it is time we bought a clock!
