Growing Tuff Spot

March 22, 2017 by Tania Thompson Leave a Comment

A random bright sunny day in the midst of dull rainy days full of showers and gloom….. time to get outside and get planting. I’d been planning a Growing Tuff Spot activity for ages – unfortunately the weather had not been on our side but at least I’d had the opportunity to collect various garden pots and seeding trays over the weeks and ensure a large number of toilet rolls and tin cans were at the ready….. then all we had to do was await some sunshine.

Set up was simple – 1 bag of compost (we used about half) various seeding pots, toilet rolls, tin cans, a variety of seed packets, also some seeds from last year’s pumpkin crop, a number of garden utensils, spoons, small amounts of torn newspaper to wedge in the bottom of the toilet rolls and watering cans.

Lots of hands on play and great fun following instructions as well as devising their own planting methods. Toilet rolls were plugged with a bit of scrunched up newspaper and then half filled with compost, seeds were added, more compost and then a little watering. These were then placed in tin cans.

Planting Tuff Tray

I had planned to use sticky labels and try a bit of mark making but after a mud feast and water party…… they had lost their stickiness. We also used smaller propagator seed trays and practised counting out the seeds into individual pots and talking about half full and full.

Gardening With Toddlers

Dirty, messy fun and definitely one for the great outdoors. The two girls who engaged with excitement in this activity were aged 24 months and 34 months. They are currently still watering their seed pots daily and waiting with anticipation for the seedlings to start growing.

Gardening Tuff Tray

Due to my anything other than green fingers and disastrous history of gardening, I am not convinced the seedlings will be a success but this was all about having some fun and giving growing a go outdoors.
