Ever since seeing the Pumpkin Geoboard over on Danya Banya we have wanted to try one for ourselves. So with Halloween around the corner we had the perfect opportunity to make some alterations and create our own Glow In The Dark Loom Band Pumpkin.
First we needed a pumpkin. Last year we went pumpkin picking for the first time. This year the weather was miserable but we managed to find a small pumpkin for Adam.
Last December we created a Golf Tee Christmas Tree. Adam loved using his wooden toy hammer to knock the golf tees into the polystyrene cone. This time Adam used the hammer to knock the golf tees into his pumpkin.
Adam needed some support to do this but it was a great gross motor skill activity.
Once we had added all of the golf tees to the pumpkin it was time to attach the glow in the dark loom bands. Adam was too young during the Loom Band craze to use them so it was the first time we had both experienced the resource. The Loom Bands seemed perfect for sensory and fine motor activities.
Adam was brilliant at hooking a Loom Band over a golf tee and stretching it across to another tee. It was a great way of exercising different muscles in his hands. I loved his look of concentration as he focused on the activity until each and every Loom Band had been used.
Our Loom Band Geoboard Pumpkin was complete. However, it was time to turn off the lights and test whether or not it would glow in the dark.
At first nothing happened. After our recent Glow In The Dark Spider Web failure I was beginning to think we would never get to play in the dark. Then I remembered our UV Blacklight torch. We have used it several times during our Neon play and I wondered whether it would have any impact on our Geoboard Pumpkin. I shone the UV blacklight torch on to the pumpkin and it worked perfectly.
Our Glow In The Dark Loom Band Pumpkin looked beautiful. Unfortunately the photographs do not do the colours of the Loom Bands justice. Adam took one look at it and declared “wow”. It would make a great table centre-piece or Halloween decoration – certainly an alternative to your typical carved pumpkin!
Remember to take a look at the brilliant design on Danya Banya’s Pumpkin Geoboard.
