As Adam loved the activity so much I wanted to find another way of using the colourful firework play mat within a play activity. I wanted a large scale activity so we created a Firework Tuff Spot.
I printed 13 copies of Twinkl’s Bonfire Playdough Mat and laminated them. This way the mats can reused for future activities. I cut off the white border and sellotaped the mats to our black Tuff Spot. Make sure you sellotape all of the edges so that nothing can get under the paper. As the mats are laminated the sellotape peels off of them easily.
I then poured 1KG of Black Turtle Beans into the black Tuff Spot. I clearly under estimated how far 1KG of black turtle beans would go in a Tuff Spot!
I didn’t have the opportunity to go to the shops to purchase some more so we adapted the activity instead. I pushed the black turtle beans to cover a few of the colourful firework mats and then started our activity.
Adam used our star cookie cutters to make firework shaped spaces within the black turtle beans so that the firework patterns underneath could be seen. This was a great fine motor skill activity. Adam placed a playdough cutter onto the table and then picked out all of the black turtle beans from inside. It was surprising how long Adam persevered with this activity until every bean had been removed from all five of the stars.
He then turned his attention to exploring the sensory element of the black turtle beans. He used the Tuff Spot as a giant sensory bin and moved the beans around the tray. We created different firework noises as he played and pretended we we creating firework images beneath our black turtle beans.
Tidying up was simple. I gave Adam a bowl and together we scooped up the black turtle beans until only a few were left. I lifted up and tilted the Tuff Spot and Adam helped guide the remaining beans into the bowl. Adam then helped me to peel the sellotape away from the laminated firework mats. Both our resources will be re-used time and time again.
