DIY Alphabet Dominoes

March 21, 2016 by Emma Edwards Leave a Comment

This weeks #ToolsForLearning theme is Dominoes. I couldn’t resist showcasing our DIY Alphabet Dominoes that we made 2 1/2 years ago and are still played with on a regular basis.

DIY Alphabet Dominoes

I made our DIY Alphabet Dominoes using a box of wooden transport Dominoes and an Alphablocks magazine. You could cut out any alphabet pictures or use alphabet stickers as long as you have two copies of each letter. There are even Alphablock images from the Cbeebies website which you could use to print out two copies.

How to make your own dominoe game

I cut out the Alphablock images so they fitted onto one half of each domino. I ensured I had 2 copies of each letter and then started to place the letters onto the domino pieces. I did this before gluing them down to make sure that I didn’t end up with the two images of the same letter on one domino.

Once all of the Alphablock letters had been positioned, I set about securing them in place. I used a little Mod Podge Glue underneath the letter, placed it on the domino and spread some more glue on top. This created a varnish coat which made sure the letters didn’t peel off. I left the dominoes to dry overnight and used additional Alphablock items to decorate the wooden box.

Alphabet Busy Bag

Two and a half years later, the dominoes are still going strong. Adam does not need any support to match the letters and create his own Alphabet Domino game. He is able to play the game independently or with others.

It took some time before Adam stopped simply creating a line with the Alphabet Domino pieces. Now he will create elaborate chains.

Homemade letter recognition dominoes

As our DIY Alphabet Dominoes fit neatly inside the wooden box it makes a great Busy Bag. Our Alphabet Dominoes have even been on several holidays with us. I wonder if they will last a further 2 1/2 years worth of play!

Welcome!

Emma and Adam

During a difficult pregnancy suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) Emma vowed to make every day an adventure once she had recovered. Adventures of Adam is the outcome of completing a 100 day play challenge with Adam as part of that promise. Emma has a section dedicated to HG friendly play activities so that Mums can still be part of their children’s play whilst they are ill.
