Dinosaur Painting Tuff Spot

March 12, 2015 by Emma Edwards 2 Comments

Todays activity combines not just one play challenge but two. As well as continuing the Tuff Spot A-Z Challenge, our Dinosaur Painting Tuff Spot is part of the Painting Challenge hosted by Messy Little Monster. This process art challenge runs for 35 days and focuses on fun painting techniques rather than the end product.

challenge

Our challenge was to paint with toys. In the past Adam has enjoyed painting with cars either by making car tracks, pushing painted cars down a ramp or mixing paint with shaving foam. Adam’s new love is Dinosaurs so we created a Dinosaur Painting Tuff Spot.

Setting up the activity was easy. I simply stuck A3 paper to the bottom of the Tuff Spot Tray (affiliate link) with sellotape. You could do this activity directly onto the Tuff Spot but I wanted the colours to show up more. Once the Tuff Spot was covered I squirted small amounts of paint around the Tuff Spot. I placed a variety of plastic dinosaurs near the paint and let Adam explore the Tuff Spot himself.

Adam knew immediately what to do. “Dinosaur stomp!” he shouted and then proceeded to push a dinosaur into the paint and stomp it around the Tuff Spot.

I was impressed when Adam realised he could make each foot a different colour and that it produced a repeating pattern.

The Tuff Spot was perfect for containing any mess and provided an enclosed space for the dinosaurs to stomp in.

I found the process art liberating. I didn’t have to think about what the end artwork would look like but rather focused on the process of painting with toys. Adam loved making dinosaur foot prints and was excited that each dinosaur produced a different type of print. This is definitely an activity we will repeat!

Take a look at the other fun painting techniques on Messy Little Monster. There are so many different ways to experience painting – which one will you choose first?

I love the mismatch of all those wonderful dinosaur footprints, really bright and colourful and lends itself nicely to a matching activity after.

Thanks for linking up to Tuesday Tutorials, I’ve pinned this on our group board.

Welcome!

Emma and Adam

During a difficult pregnancy suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) Emma vowed to make every day an adventure once she had recovered. Adventures of Adam is the outcome of completing a 100 day play challenge with Adam as part of that promise. Emma has a section dedicated to HG friendly play activities so that Mums can still be part of their children’s play whilst they are ill.
