Counting Heart Cake Toppers

January 21, 2016 by Emma Edwards Leave a Comment

Adam’s love for anything number based continues so we have created some Valentine themed mathematical fun. Our Counting Heart Cake Toppers activity is quick to set up and can be used time and time again.

When I discovered some amazing heart cake toppers from Tiger Stores (similar to these on Amazon) I knew they would be perfect for counting and for developing Adam’s pincer grasp as he picked up each one. I placed all 50 cake flags in a heart shaped storage box which I had filled with red play dough.

Next I took ten heart cup cake cases and numbered each one using a black marker pen. I also filled these with red playdough. I placed the cup cake cases and the heart cake toppers on the table and demonstrated the activity to Adam.

The activity involved Adam locating a numbered cupcake case and filling it with that many heart cake toppers. In no time at all he had accurately filled the cupcake cases numbered one, two and three. At this point the hardest part was getting out the individual heart cake toppers as there were so many in the box.

The red playdough ensured that the heart cake toppers stood up by themselves and gave a substance that Adam could push the toothpick style sticks into.

Adam then turned his attention to the bigger numbers. He completed cupcake case number ten as well as numbers seven, six and four. He then asked if we could fill all of the cupcake cases. Unfortunately we only had 50 heart cake toppers which meant when filling the last cupcake case (number nine) we were five short.

Adam had a wonderful time with his Counting Heart Cake Toppers and managed to place all 50 hearts back into the heart shaped storage box to be played with another day.
