We are getting into the festive mood. The Christmas decorations are out of the loft and our Story Book Advent is set up. I realised something was missing. We don’t own a Christmas themed game to play. Luckily Orchard Toys came to the rescue with not one game but two festive games in one box – Christmas Surprises.

Christmas Surprises by Orchard Toys is a seasonal game to reinforce young children’s knowledge of colours and shapes. The double sided boards enable you to play two games.
Game 1 – Christmas Tree Colour Game
The object of this game is to help Father Christmas decorate his Christmas tree with different coloured baubles. This colour matching game encourages colour recognition and observational skills.
Game 2 – Father Christmas Sack Shapes Game
Turn the board over to reveal Father Christmas with an empty sack. Shaped presents wrapped in colourful paper are laid out on the table. You take turns to roll a dice, find the matching shaped present and place it on the sack. At the end of the game you get to turn over the cards to reveal your presents.
As soon as I realised the games contained 2d shapes I knew Dad-Dad would insist that Adam used the correct mathematical terms. We are not allowed to use the term diamond – the shape has to be called a rhombus. I dread the day we get on to the technical terms for 3d shapes!
Adam took to the games straight away. His game playing skills has improved. He is getting better at turn taking, overcoming disappointment when he doesn’t win and patience when waiting for his turn. We certainly saw a competitive side to Nana whilst playing.
Christmas Surprises provides a high quality learning game that we love and expect from Orchard Toys. I can see the game being a firm favourite activity to play throughout the festive season. Christmas Surprises would also make a wonderful addition to a Christmas Eve box.
Christmas Surprises is available on the Orchard Toys website or from Amazon.
