We have teamed up with bloggers from around the world to bring you a Kindergarten Blog Hop. A monthly theme will be set and each blogger will choose a different area of the curriculum. This months theme is Apples and we have chosen a phonics based activity – Apple Alphabet Match.

As soon as I saw this cute 3D Apple Notepad I knew it would be perfect to use in an activity to develop Adam’s fine motor skills. I could tell he would enjoy flicking through the pages.
As Adam is confident with recognising lowercase letters of the alphabet, we are beginning to work on his uppercase recognition. I printed a-z on apple cards from Twinkl and laminated them for durability. I stored them in a wooden apple box my husband received as a present. Inside the 3D Apple Notepad I wrote the alphabet using uppercase letters using one page per letter. The alphabet was repeated five times in the notepad.
During the game Adam had to pick a lowercase apple from the wooden apple box and tell me its sound. He then had to search through the 3D Apple Notepad to find the corresponding uppercase letter. Once he had matched the two letters together he posted the laminated letter card into the apple cardboard box.
I was suprised with how well Adam focused at this activity. Whilst searching for the uppercase letter he sang the Alphabet song, pausing in between each letter as he separated the pages. If he turned over too many pages at once he flicked back to where he was originally.
As the alphabet was repeated several times in the notebook it didn’t matter where he started within the apple. I loved seeing the excitement on his face when he was able to match the two letters.
I can tell we will be playing our apple alphabet match for many months to come.
