Alphabet Formation Compare Bears

January 5, 2016 by Emma Gadsby 8 Comments

We are excited to be participating in a new weekly series called #toolsforlearning. Each week bloggers from around the world will be sharing learning activities based around a resource. This weeks chosen tool is Rainbow Bears. Due to my UK teaching background I know Rainbow Bears as Compare Bears. As Adam is at the early stages of writing we created an Alphabet Formation Compare Bear activity.

For Christmas Adam received a wonderful Wipe Clean Shaped Alphabet Activity Book. Every page is cut out to form each capital letter of the alphabet. Although the book is designed to be written on using a dry wipe pen we used the letters as a template. I folded the book so that just one letter was visible. Adam then used the letter outline to place the Compare Bears on top.

Forming letters with Compare Bears

As soon as each letter was completed Adam pushed the compare bears to one side, turned the page over to reveal a new letter and started again. I was amazed at his level of concentration.

We attempted to make the Compare Bears face the correct way as if they had written. The Activity Book gave helpful indications as to which direction the letter should be formed.

Our Alphabet Formation Compare Bears could be used as a Busy Bag and used time and time again. It is incredibly easy to set up and the activity promotes independent play. The activity can also be easily adapted. If you do not have access to pre-made large letters you could write them yourself. Using this method you could create lower case letters and numbers to continue the Compare Bear formation fun.

As this activity doesn’t require any preparation and promotes independent play it can be classed as a Hyperemesis Gravidarum friendly activity.

As someone who is in the pits of HG at the moment – thankyou! I’ve been wanting to do some letter recognition activities but haven’t had the energy-we have one of those wipe clean books and rainbow bears too, so now we can!

Emma and Adam

During a difficult pregnancy suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) Emma vowed to make every day an adventure once she had recovered. Adventures of Adam is the outcome of completing a 100 day play challenge with Adam as part of that promise.
