How do they do it? Each year I don’t think it is possible to beat my favourite Christmas advert yet time and time again I am surprised! How do they produce heart warming, funny and feelings of nostalgia that want to make you buy something within a couple of minutes.
2015 saw John Lewis’ Man On The Moon and subsequent Aldi spoof along with Sainsbury’s bringing back the classic childrens book character Mog The Cat. However, just when I thought a cat would out win the Christmas advert competition we saw “A Pug’s Christmas” by Vision Direct.
The combination of a pug dog selling contact lenses seems far fetched but that is what makes the advert so appealing. Gizmo is a short sighted pug. The ad follows a heartwarming story of Gizmo and a boy. Through many adventures and misadventures Gizmos Eric Morecambe style glasses are broken beyond repair.
We instantly fell in love with the ad. The aim behind the advert is to showcase Vision Directs super fast, next day delivery on contact lenses to UK addresses. However, just as you think it can’t get any better, Vision Direct released a hilarious behind the scenes video. Take a look:
You would not believe how many times Adam has watched the behind the scenes video. He watches it on repeat and keeps exclaiming, “it’s a talking dog!” Gizmo appears to be a true diva!
“I was born to play a pug in glasses. How did I end up advertising contact lenses? I’ve never even had an eye test. I’m a dog!”
Although the jokes go over Adam’s head at the moment, he is fascinated simply by the fact that the dog is talking and wearing clothes.
You can read more about the campaign over on the Vision Direct website.
Despite it being Vision Directs first Christmas advert campaign they have truly become a contender in the best Christmas advert. I look forward to seeing what they produce again next year as they have set the standard high!
Adverts can be powerful things. What is your favourite Christmas advert?
