#365Penguins – February

February 29, 2016 by Emma Gadsby Leave a Comment

Our 365 Penguins adventure continues with #365Penguins – February! Last month saw us start a year long project in conjunction with the book 365 Penguins by Jean-Luc Fromental. In the story a penguin is delivered to the family’s house each day throughout the year. We are doing the same. Every day throughout 2016 Adam will have a penguin delivered to our house.

#365 Penguin - 59 penguins

Last month we demonstrated how we make the penguins. They are incredibly easy to make from black disposable coffee cups. I usually make one penguin a day whilst cooking tea.

This month we had a special delivery on February 14th – our Valentines Day Penguin arrived.

February is a relatively quiet month in the book. “February has only twenty-eight days. Each morning another penguin arrived. That made: 31+28=?? 59 penguins!”

There are two differences with our month. First, Adam receives his penguin each evening, usually after bath time and just before bed. The second difference has caused some issues. February 2016 has 29 days in it as it is a leap year!

February 29th for 365 Penguins

We took to Instagram to see what solution our readers could think of. There were some fantastic ideas. However, after much deliberation, I finally decided that on February 29th our penguins should have a special delivery of food – fish.

Our delivery came much earlier than normal so that Adam could feed the fish to the penguins.

The process also turned into a colour sorting pattern activity. I told Adam that the penguins standing next to each other could not have the same coloured fish. I was surprised how well he managed the activity.

One question I get asked a lot is where do we put all the penguins. Ironically this is the dilemma that has to be solved during March within the book. For now Adam has enjoyed stacking the penguins and places them in his wooden play house.

I wonder what penguin adventures March will bring!
